How the idea came alive: Crafting the Lighthouse of Alexandria

The idea for our Lighthouse of Alexandria wooden puzzle was born at the crossroads of two passions — timeless architecture and modern technology. As our team at Ugears began exploring concepts for a new product line, we envisioned something that went beyond a simple decorative piece. We wanted to create a model that was not only beautiful, but also functional — something that would light up both literally and imaginatively.

That’s how the concept of a lighthouse emerged. A lighthouse symbolizes guidance, hope, and discovery — themes that resonate deeply with builders of all ages. It also offered the perfect opportunity to introduce electronic elements into our line of 3D wooden puzzles, allowing us to blend the tactile satisfaction of wooden assembly with the magic of illumination.

Why the Lighthouse of Alexandria?

Our choice of the Lighthouse of Alexandria was far from random. As one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, it stands as a testament to human ingenuity and ambition. Built over 2,000 years ago on the island of Pharos near the Nile Delta, it was among the tallest structures of its time, guiding sailors safely into port for more than a millennium.

Its majestic form, symbolic significance, and mysterious history made it the ideal candidate for our next wooden puzzle for adults. We were captivated by the challenge of reconstructing something that no longer exists — a lost wonder that had once shone so brightly.

From imagination to blueprint

Our journey began with in-depth research. Because the original lighthouse has been lost to time, we studied ancient texts, architectural reconstructions, and even the myths that surround it. We sifted through conflicting depictions — some suggested three distinct tiers, others a single tapering structure. One particularly fascinating theory described a massive mirror at the top, which reflected sunlight by day and firelight by night.

Finding the right design meant balancing historical accuracy with artistic interpretation. We wanted our model to feel grounded in reality, but also to ignite the imagination — to bring history to life in a tangible, hands-on way.

Building with light

Adding electronics to a wooden model was uncharted territory for us. It pushed us to think beyond gears and wood joinery. How could we integrate LED lights in a way that felt intuitive and immersive?

After much testing and iteration, we developed a dual-light system: one LED at the top that glows behind a flame cutout, and another that lights the interior latticework of the tower. The result is more than a model — it’s a miniature lighthouse that actually shines, a beacon of innovation in the world of wooden puzzles.

Design, detail, and scale

When it came to the model’s scale and complexity, we wanted it to be engaging without being overwhelming. Our audience ranges from hobbyists to advanced builders, so we designed the assembly process to be deeply rewarding, with just the right level of challenge. The intricate detailing, open lattice design, and layered construction make it not only fun to build but also beautiful to display, whether you leave it in its natural wood finish or customize it with paint or stain.

What we hope you feel

More than anything, we want this model to evoke a sense of wonder. Building the Lighthouse of Alexandria is about rediscovering a lost wonder, about being part of something ancient yet innovative. It’s about the thrill of creating light with your own hands, and the quiet pride that comes from completing something both meaningful and majestic.

So when you build this 3D wooden puzzle, we hope you feel like an explorer, an architect, a dreamer — someone who looks to the past not just to admire it, but to bring it to life again.
