V8 Engine

Assemble me. Fire up your passion for mechanics!

V8 engines, with their signature roar, are synonymous with automotive power. Thanks to the balanced arrangement of two banks of four cylinders in a V configuration, V8 engines produce less vibration than six-cylinder engines, allowing for a larger engine with greater horsepower. Patented in 1902 by French engineer Léon Levavasseur, the V8 is most widely known for providing the muscle in muscle cars, but did you know V8 engines were first used extensively in powerboats, and have even been used in airplanes and motorbikes?

Motorheads and modeling enthusiasts have been asking us for years for a complex engine model, and here it is – the Ugears V8 Engine! This one's for all you gearheads, motorheads, pistonheads, petrolheads, grease monkeys, and car connoisseurs. The V8 Engine from Ugears is a bit of a brag – from us to our customers when we designed it, and from you to your friends and family when you build it. The thing is, we get you. We share your love of all things mechanical. Our team is made up of people who simply have to know how things work, and we want to help others learn too.

The V8 Engine fully replicates all the main mechanisms in a real V8, including eight cylinders with pistons moving in cycle, with two cylinders "firing" for every 90 degrees of crankshaft rotation; 16 spring-loaded valves opening and closing as they are pushed by heads on the rotating camshafts, crankcase and valve train components linked with a timing chain, and a throttle valve on the intake manifold. Connect the model to a power source using a USB-C cable, then flip the on/off switch to "on" to watch your engine come to life, or manually set the V8 Engine in motion by twisting the knob located under the on/off switch.

V8 Engine features:

  • 1:6 scale engine model of an iconic internal combustion engine
  • Can be operated using an electric motor or manually by turning a knob
  • Electric motor styled as a generator
  • 8 cylinders with pistons moving in cycle
  • 16 spring-loaded valves opening and closing
  • Engine accessories: A/C compressor, alternator, power steering pump and water pump
  • Other realistic details: stylized exhaust manifolds, spark plugs, oil pan, dipstick, etc.

DIY wooden engine features:

  • Assembles without glue or tools
  • Assembled in stages—first the cylinder block, then the valve blocks
  • Step-by-step instructions in 11 languages
  • Replaceable rubber band on the front of the engine
  • 32-link timing chain with adjustable tension (using two tensioners)
  • Free spare parts upon request

There is some small mistakes. The explanations in user guide does not fit with the real parts

I seek challenging kits and this one delivered. I took extreme care to smooth and wax any parts that have relative motion and was rewarded by a first time smooth running.

Fun kit to build but have a LOT of patience! I'm fairly experienced with these kits. I've built 3 of them from 3 different manufacturers. All 3 were on the 4 to 5 difficulty range. Have upwards of 35 hours building this one.,more than any of the others. Wood quality is very good, instructions are quit clear,no script, just pictures. Only complaints I have are 1 . The camshaft gears are a little to thin . I broke 1 of 4 removing them from sheet 2.
This is the only part I have broken in the 3 kits I've built! I glued it but it broke when operating the engine so I contacted them to get me a new part, hopefully they will send me one. Problem no. 2 I strongly recommend gluing the camshaft lobes in place on the shaft as I did as it is virtually impossible to assemble while holding these 8!! lobes in place. Just be certain that they are glued in exactly the correct position!!!!! Also most parts are very small! So have strong nimble fingers, good up close eyesight and again, Big patience! Also the small accessory pulleys are too lose and floppy so the drive belt goes out of place at times. Overall it was a fun and challenging kit to build! ENJOY! Also when basic assembly is done be advised it will take an hour or so to get it all to rotate smoothly, again, have patience and don't put the elect motor on until you are sure it operates smoothly in both directions . That's all I have to say about thaaaat.

I just ordered this kit and haven't even opened it yet. But Ugears is pestering me to provide a review (twice now since the package was delivered). How can I provide a meaningful review if I haven't even started building it? So I'm rating it based upon my past experience. I buy Ugears because I've been happy with my other models. They keep improving their kits (they've come a long way since the rubber-band days) in both substantial and subtle ways. Substantial in terms of now providing electric motors. Subtle in terms of tiny details in how the pieces are designed and cut. "Continuous Improvement" seems to be their philosophy, and it shows in their product. Loyal customer here!

Sorry cannot do this as the item is a present for later in the year. As it is still boxed it is unlikely you will get a review this time but all previous items have been very satisfactory.

This was the most complex build of a wooden DIY model that I have done. I enjoyed it as much as my UGears tourbillon clock!
The only suggestion that I might have is that the black cord for representing the ignition wires frayed too easily, and I couldn’t reform it using pva glue..

The instructions are great and the kit goes together well.
It is looking good as each assembly is completed and works well. That please me!
