A brief history of Earth Day
Earth Day began in 1970, during a time of rising environmental awareness in the United States. Smog-choked cities, polluted rivers, and an oil spill off the coast of California sparked public outrage—and action. On April 22, 1970, an estimated 20 million Americans took to the streets, parks, and auditoriums to protest the deterioration of the environment. That first Earth Day helped launch the modern environmental movement and led directly to the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and landmark legislation like the Clean Air Act and Clean Water Act.
Since then, Earth Day has grown into the largest civic observance in the world. Today, it’s recognized in over 190 countries, encouraging people everywhere to live more mindfully and sustainably.
